First Date

Pretty Latina in skin-tight jeans, brown leather jacket, vibrant red lipstick. Texting, waiting, looking, texting, until at last she turns toward her car, returning in moments still texting, meets her date beneath umbrellas, a strapping black-haired fellow also in brown leather, hugs and smiles, disaster averted.

John Deer Cap

Mister John Deer cap, hands in belt loops, watches the young beauties intently. From across the room you can feel him not blink, he's that focused on teenage curves and bouncing plaid school skirts. Where does this go?

Table-swapping, rapid conversations, centering on the bearded hipster who appears to make decisions. Eye contact, business casual, note-taking. Job interviews? These are people's futures, here at Starbucks.

Black business jacket, black tight-curls, black eyes beneath black eyebrows. Radiant smile, and I catch her looking. But when she walks out she keeps her eyes locked straight on the door.

Buff beauty strides purposefully down the lot, stares briefly into my car in passing, strides purposefully on. From fifty yards away I wonder what she found worthy of attention.
